Mission Statement
Thank you for expressing interest in Maple Hill Montessori. It is our pleasure to offer you and your child the best in traditional Montessori education, in a truly unique environment. Maple Hill is a small and intimate school, cultivated and nurtured by several passionate and dedicated individuals.
The schools framework is based on several key elements: a concise primary and elementary curriculum, additional multi medium arts program, and the final important element, its staff. The curriculum for this school is built solely, on the Montessori theory and philosophy, in order to satisfy each child's intellectual, emotional, and social needs. With a structured program and low child/teacher ratio (8:1) the Montessori education allows the child to develop at their own pace in a non-competitive learning environment. This promotes independence and self-development. Our school works by one curriculum, while working to integrate the Ontario Curriculum through Montessori Theories.
Administration is responsible for the organization of trips, specific programming and school social events. This ensures consistency, control and well scheduled events to ensure everyone within the school benefits. This allows for unity in classrooms, and at home.
We are pleased to employ several key individuals highly qualified for both Casa and Elementary programs being offered at Maple Hill. Their qualifications are listed in the “Statement of Information”. Each directress brings a distinctive flavour and uniqueness to their classroom. When placed under one roof they become the cornerstones of Maple Hill.
It is our goal to quench a child's thirst. To open up their world and give them the opportunity to explore avenues every parent wants for their child. The multi medium arts programs have been incorporated into the daily agenda to ensure that each child gains knowledge not only in academics but also in exploring their creative energy. Highly accredited instructors teach all our conversational French, music, visual arts, physical education and dance programs.
Special initiatives are offered through Maple Hill to maximize the service we provide to our clients. Hot catered meals are provided for by a local well respected restaurant, meal evaluations for each child are completed and sent out on a daily basis. Our library has been made available for both parents and children wishing to utilize our resources. After school tutoring and extra curricular classes for our children are available such as: Piano, Guitar, Sewing . Varsity sports are in the programming stages and will be taking shape within the year. Simple initiatives such as these are common place at Maple Hill. A parent and teacher advisory committee, has been in place for it's second year. This parent driven committee assists with school socials and fundraisers. It is essential to have an open line of communication at all times between parent, faculty and school administration.
Within this package you will find the necessary documentation for registering your child for September 2003-2004. For your convenience we have created a schedule that may best suit your child's needs, two day, three day, and full-time schedules are available. Our school has an intimate setting with only 54 spaces available, on a daily basis. These will be granted on a first come first served basis.
If you have interest in our school, we would like to suggest that an interview be held.
Bring your child to our school; have them take part in a class. It is important for us to know how they feel about the program. This evaluation process will enable you to evaluate us through both a child's and a personal perspective. At the same time the school will take this opportunity to evaluate you, and your parenting style. It is through this process that we are able to match with families that are concise with our style and philosophy. Our mandate is to work with children, to maximize their abilities.
The admission process begins with the Admission Procedure Checklist. All necessary information and documentation must be completed and forwarded to the administration office plus a $50.00 nonrefundable deposit.

3. Measuring Student Progress: The Montessori curriculum is integrated. The measuring of
student progress is the same regardless of subject area. The information provided below is
the same for each of the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics.
Primary Level (ages 2.5-6 years - Preschool through SK)
Montessori materials are self-correcting, allowing the students to explore and perfect their
work. Many lessons build in sequence to allow a student to understand the concepts being
taught. Each student works with the material until a level of competence is reached. They
then progress to the next lesson. This in itself is an evaluation of the student's ability. Each
student is taught individually giving the teacher immediate insights into the student's grasp of every concept taught. Teachers track students through the use of a curriculum outline and rubrics of each child. Written anecdotal progress reports are prepared and given to parents and legal guardians three times a year.
Lower Elementary Level (ages 6-9 years - Grades 1 through 3)
As in the Primary Level, each concept is broken into small stages called lessons. As the
student masters one lesson, they move to the next lesson. Since lessons are taught
individually or in small groups of two or three students at a similar level, the teacher is able to assess each student's level of understanding and identify if they are ready to move forward to the next lesson. Teachers track students through the use of a curriculum outline and rubrics for each child. As the 7 and 8 year old, level (grade 2 and 3) the students are given cognitive tests using the standardized Canadian Test of Basic Skills (CTBS), for Math and Language (reading and writing), once per year. Written grading and anecdotal progress
reports are prepared and given to parents and legal guardians three times a year.
Upper Elementary Level (ages 9-12 years - Grades 4 through 6)
Students continue to work individually as in the Primary and Lower Elementary
Levels. Tests are given to allow students to learn test-taking skills. Teachers track
students through the use of a curriculum outline and rubrics for each student. At the 9 and 10-year-old level (grade 4 and 5) the students are given cognitive tests using the
standardized Canadian Cognitive Achievement Test (CCAC) for Math and Lanuage (reading
and writing), once per year. All students in the last year (grade 6) of the three-year program
prepare for the SSAT's, which many are required to take for entry into school's to which they
are applying. Written grading and anecdotal progress reports are prepared and given to
parents and legal guardians three times a year.
4. Enhancing Student Safety
Montessori teachers receive their teacher training from colleges and other institutions
that are not recognized by the Ontario College of Teachers. Most Montessori teachers do
not obtain an Ontario Teaching Certificate and would not be registered with the Ontario
College of Teachers.
5. Providing Consumer Protection Information
The school's Parent Policy and Procedure Handbook which is provided to all parents and
guardians includes a statement regarding information relating to the Parents rights as
consumers from the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services' website at
www.cbs.gov.on.ca or by telephone at 416-326-8800, or toll-free at 1-800-889-9768.
6. Annual Student Evaluations: Testing is done regularly on various levels. This testing
has been prepared so that it complies with the Montessori philosophy. Students at the 7,
and 8-year-old level are given cognitive tests using the standardized Canadian Test of
Basic Skills (CTBS), for Math and Language (reading and writing) once per year.
Students at the 9 and 10-year-old level (grade 4 and 5) are given cognitive tests using
the standardized Canadian Cognitive Achievement Test (CCAC) for Math and Language
(reading and writing), once per year. All students in the last year (grade 6) of the threeyear
Upper Elementary program prepare for the SSAT's, which many are required to take
for entry into school's to which they are applying. Evaluations of these tests parallel those
within the Ontario curriculum, using the Montessori philosophy.
